Tape Salads. Ongoing found magnetic tape archive. For The Momental Ståhl will be creating a Berlin specific portion of the archive, conducting her own field research as well as seeking participation from the audience. Åsa Ståhl will be presenting her Tape Salad Archive as a physical installation within the Sparwasser HQ gallery space. Her Tape Salad archive has been an ongoing project for several years where Ståhl methodically searches for discarded fragments of magnetic tape and thrown away cassettes, in an attempt to give voice to or to create an aural portrait of strangers. Colleagues and friends have also contributed to her archive sending their findings to her. The archive now consists of an international collection of magnetic tapes. The tapes are delicately re-assembled for playback on a cassette recorder. Ståhl will be working with her collection in the gallery during the first and the last weeks of the show. Since every place sounds differently she will also be collecting her tapes throughout Berlin, as well as seeking participation from audience members to contribute to the archive with magnetic tapes as well as their words on their findings. Ståhl’s fascination for tape salads has grown out of an interest in providing a new life for voices that have been silenced. To her, these found cassettes are a symbol of all the peripheral voices that are excluded in public conversations. The project is also a way to try to make something as elusive and perishable as sound become tangible. She will also be working with a linear sound piece in the gallery, inviting visitors to participate in the production. This Berlin based archive can further be disseminated on the local radio, providing listeners with a novel encounter of the discarded sounds of strangers. Åsa Ståhl was born 1976 in Sweden, is a media and sound artist who received her Masters in Radio at Goldsmiths College, University of London in 2001 and previously studied political science, ethnology and comparative literature at Lund University, Sweden. She currently works as an artist, journalist, lecturer and researcher surrounding issues of storytelling, interactivity and participatory situations in museum contexts. Her sound based art has grown out of her radio journalism practice. She has participated and exhibited her work at the Wanakio Art Center, Japan, Konstakuten, Stockholm and the Pixelachefestival in Helsinki. Her rich media based works have also been shown on Swedish television as well as several commissions for Swedish Radio. In 2005 she was a recipient of an IASPIS grant to undergo a residency at the Wanakio Art Center in Japan and winter/spring 2006 she spent on a NIFCA Research Residency at Soumenlinna, Finland. http://aok.el-ljud.se |
