In this interview, theorist, artist and designer Patricia Reed outlines the specificities of commoning emerging from the shadows of capitalist realism. Focusing on the pitfalls and successes of commoning in and outside of the artworld, Reed brings to light the stakes of commoning today faced with the failures in governance influenced by the technosphere. From observing the evolution of strands of commoning in the arts to identifying the sites, scales and conditions of a planetary commons, it becomes evident that our understanding of the collective ‘we’ must renegotiate legacy concepts of autonomy, agency and selfhood in order to be redefined by the enchanting possibilities of inhabitable modes of coexistence.
