Excerpted below is the artist and theorist Patricia Reed’s contribution “Solidarity without Sameness”. In the essay, Reed makes an inquiry into what it might take to navigate social responsibility and forge bonds of obligation when our lives our governed by abstract, impersonal forces, the most popular response so far being a global wave of right-wing nationalism which solves the problem at the border. “Can we conceive of a universalism without obliterating difference”, she asks, “and what would it mean to exist in that concept?”
